Description

Victoria Tower: A Unique Perspective of Guernsey

Victoria Tower is a striking landmark on Guernsey’s skyline which offers a rare chance to see the island from a completely new perspective. Perched on elevated ground above St Peter Port, the tower rewards those willing to climb its narrow stone stairway with sweeping views that stretch across the town, the northern and eastern coasts, and even to neighbouring islands on a clear day.

Visitors wishing to climb the tower – which is free of charge - will first need to collect the key from nearby Guernsey Museum at Candie Gardens & Art Gallery, a charming introduction to Guernsey’s heritage. Inside, the tower’s interior winds upward through 99 stone steps, offering glimpses of the sturdy construction, the historic feel and its elevated position in the landscape.

Reaching the top, visitors are greeted by a panoramic viewing platform that makes the effort worthwhile. From here, it is possible to admire St Peter Port’s rooftops, the harbour bustling with boats, the rolling countryside beyond, and the sparkling waters of the English Channel. On exceptionally clear days, the islands of Herm and Sark appear on the horizon, while seabirds and passing vessels add to the vista.

Visitors to Victoria Tower often remark that climbing it is as much about the journey as the destination; a small adventure that leaves a lasting impression.

Did you know?

• When Victoria Tower was restored and reopened in 2006, care was taken to preserve original features such

as the stonework and lantern, allowing visitors to see it much as it looked in 1848.

• Victoria Tower’s elevated position made it a useful lookout point during the late 19th century, helping the

militia monitor shipping, mail boats, and maritime activity in the English Channel.
