Letter Box Study Group: 50 years of preserving postal heritage
Post boxes have long formed a distinctive part of the streetscape, reflecting changes in design, technology and postal services over time. Guernsey Post’s stamp issue, which features a selection of the island’s post boxes illustrating key periods and features of its postal history, provides an opportunity to celebrate the Letter Box Study Group (LBSG), which marks its 50th anniversary in 2026.
Founded in 1976 by a small group of dedicated enthusiasts, the LBSG was established to research and record the wide variety of post boxes found across the British Isles. At that time, formal documentation was scarce, and much of the knowledge surrounding box types and their development was largely held by local craftsmen, surveyors, and manufacturers.
Over the past five decades, the group has developed an authoritative and detailed record of more than 115,000 post boxes, documenting their locations, designs and historical context. This work has greatly enhanced understanding of the evolution of pillar, wall and lamp boxes, identifying numerous distinct types and subtle variations that might otherwise have been overlooked.
The LBSG’s activities extend beyond research. Through publications, fieldwork and collaboration with postal and heritage organisations, it promotes the appreciation and preservation of post boxes as important elements of the historic environment. Its members, drawn from a wide range of backgrounds, share a common interest in postal history, design and the stories these everyday objects can tell.
As this milestone anniversary is celebrated, the Letter Box Study Group continues to ensure that post boxes are recognised not only for their practical function, but also for their significance as part of the shared heritage of the communities they serve.
