APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR ISLANDERS' KEEPSAKES

Guernsey Post announces that it is to commemorate the Centenary of the Great War (1914-1918) with a five year stamp programme, with the first issue available from October 2014.

The announcement coincides with the launch of an appeal for material from islanders who may have keepsakes and other materials relating to the Great War.

Dawn Gallienne, head of the philatelic bureau at Guernsey Post explains: - "Our initial research has revealed a wealth of information about how islanders were involved, such as the formation and work of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry and the Guernsey women who were decorated for their war work.

"However, we would be delighted to hear from islanders who may have keepsakes in their private collections.  These might be letters which were sent home during the war; trench art; military photographs of family members or friends who fought in the war, perhaps with the Royal Guernsey Militia or the Light Infantry; printed ephemera - ration books - which were made compulsory in 1917; and decorations and medals.

"During our research we have come across some original needlepoint samples which were made by convalescing Guernsey soldiers, which is absolutely beautiful. Records also show that a Guernsey Prisoner of War received a personal letter from King George V."

"It would be wonderful to be able to unearth other materials which can be incorporated into our commemorative stamp issues."

Guernsey Post has requested that anyone with materials please contact Dawn Gallienne at Guernsey Post philatelic bureau on (01481) 716486 or via email at philatelic@guernseypost.com
