Guernsey Post to release final stamp in Little Chapel quartet series
The final stamp in a quartet series celebrating the centenary of Guernsey’s Little Chapel, one of the world’s smallest chapels, is to be released by Guernsey Post’s philatelic bureau on 3 November 2023.
An iconic landmark that has drawn visitors from around the world, The Little Chapel is in the valley of Les Vauxbelets in Guernsey. It was created by Brother Déodat-Antoine, who belonged to an Order of Brothers founded by Jean-Baptiste de la Salle in France in 1680. His vision was to create miniature replica of the famous grotto and Basilica at Lourdes in the French Pyrenees.
The Little Chapel Foundation was created in August 2016 after the Chapel was gifted to the Foundation by the De la Salle Brothers. Having suffered from structural decay for a number of years, the Foundation has worked tirelessly to bring The Little Chapel back to its former glory with the help of generous donations.
Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: - “We are delighted with our stamp series depicting The Little Chapel, which is beautifully decorated with shells, pebbles, and pieces of broken china. At only 16 x 9 feet, it is one of the world’s smallest chapels and was created almost singlehandedly by Brother Déodat-Antoine.
“Our latest quartet series represents a fantastic entry into the world of philately with the entire set of stamps retailing at £6.00.”
The fourth stamp and souvenir sheet containing all four stamps are available to pre-order from 20 October at www.guernseystamps.com or by calling Philatelic Customer Services on +44 (0) 1481 716486.
