Guernsey Post celebrates 70 years of Europa stamps

Guernsey Post’s philatelic bureau announces the release of six stamps and a miniature sheet commemorating the 70th anniversary of EUROPA stamps. The issue celebrates decades of European cooperation, creativity, and a shared love of philately (stamp issue date: 1 April 2026).

First issued in 1956 by the postal administrations of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, EUROPA stamps were created to symbolise collaboration and shared cultural heritage in the early post-war period. Over the years, the programme has grown to include 53 postal organisations coordinated by PostEurop, the association representing European postal operators since 1993.

Each year, PostEurop selects a common theme for EUROPA issues, which participating postal administrations interpret in their own distinctive styles. These annual releases celebrate shared roots, culture, and heritage, while also allowing creative diversity.

The theme for 2026 is “70th Anniversary of the EUROPA Stamp: United in…”. Guernsey’s interpretation of this theme is “United in the love of stamps”, celebrating the shared passion of collectors and postal administrations across generations. Each stamp incorporates a subliminal heart motif to represent this unifying ‘love of stamps’, and highlights the significance of the number seven, representing the seven decades of EUROPA stamps.

75p - Seven falling stamps: Evoking the continuity of correspondence and the joy of philately.

97p - Seven heart balloons: Celebrating the passion and affection inspired by stamp collecting.

£1.45 - Seven rainbow-colour kite: Symbolising diversity, creativity, and vibrant European collaboration.

£1.54 - Seven perforations (2026 EUROPA common design): Featuring the official common motif issued by all participating postal administrations, representing unity, progress, and cooperation.

£1.90 - Seven radiating colours: Reflecting energy, connectivity, and the shared passion of collectors.

£1.95 - Seven flowers: Symbolising growth, continuity, and the nurturing of philatelic interest across nations and generations.

Miniature sheet (£1.54) - Seven stamp collectors: Highlighting the collective enjoyment of philately and the way it brings people together.

Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: “70 years after their first issue, EUROPA stamps continue to symbolise European cooperation and creativity. This anniversary set celebrates not only this remarkable philatelic tradition, but also the collectors who keep its spirit alive across generations.”
