Description

With its dramatic coastline and nutrient-rich waters, the Bailiwick of Guernsey provides an ideal environment for a wide variety of marine life. In recent years, jellyfish have become increasingly frequent visitors to these waters, drifting on currents and tides that shape the islands’ coastal ecosystems. Their seasonal appearances offer a fascinating glimpse into the ever-changing balance of marine life surrounding the Bailiwick.

Jellyfish are among the oldest living creatures in the world’s oceans, having existed for more than 500 million years. Despite their delicate, almost transparent forms, they are highly adapted predators. Using specialised stinging cells, they capture plankton and small fish, playing an important role within the marine food chain. Their presence can also reflect changes in ocean conditions, including rising sea temperatures and shifting ecological patterns.

This collection highlights the beauty and diversity of jellyfish found in Bailiwick waters. Featuring striking underwater photography by Sark-based photographer Sue Daly, each stamp captures the distinctive colours, shapes and characteristics of these remarkable marine species, offering a closer look at creatures often glimpsed only briefly from the shoreline.

Jellyfish form an important part of the marine ecosystem, providing food for other species and helping to maintain ecological balance. However, their increasing presence may also reflect broader environmental changes affecting the world’s oceans. Monitoring these species offers valuable insight into the health of marine habitats around the Bailiwick.

The waters surrounding the Bailiwick of Guernsey continue to support a rich and diverse marine environment. By observing and understanding the species that inhabit them, it is possible to gain a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.
