Naval Aviation
This year sees the centenary of naval aviation when the Admiralty decided back in 1909 to order its first naval airship leading to the creation of the Royal Navy Air Force.
A division dedicated to the operation of aircraft on board Royal Navy ships was created in 1924 – Royal Air Force’s Fleet Air Arm and by the time the Second World War had come to an end, the division had a CV of 59 aircraft carriers, 3,700 aircraft, 72,000 officers and men and 56 air stations located worldwide.
As with anything things change and progress as time moves on and today’s aircraft are much more advanced than they ever were some 100 years ago.
To mark this centenary, Guernsey Post has issued a stunning stamp issue featuring six aircraft types from the 20th and 21st centuries.
