William J Caparne
Although widely regarded for his landscapes and interiors, William John Caparne also painted the subtlest of flower studies. This set, of which some of the originals can be viewed at the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery in the capital town of St Peter Port, celebrates both the artist’s unique attention to detail and his love of nature.
The 26p value shows a Nerine Fothergilli Major; the 32p features a study of a Narcissus Rip Van Winkle, a Double Narcissus; depicted on the 36p value are two blooms from the iris family; the flower shown on the 40p stamp is a Daffodil Incompano Sir Watkin; the 45p shows the Garnet Dwarf Bearded Iris, which was a variety developed by Caparne; and the sixth and final value, 65p, is a stunning image of a Narcissus Sulphur Phoenix.
